The Lotus flower has varying yet similar meanings across cultures. In Egyptian culture they represent rebirth, as they close their flowers and sink into the dirty waters at night but are reborn the next day when they blossom again. In Buddhism as well as rebirth they are a symbol of beauty and purity as they emerge each day from the murky depths still pure and exquisite. A white Lotus flower in particular, represents mental purity and spiritual perfection. In Hinduism its meaning is again associated with beauty, but also with fertility, prosperity, spirituality and eternity. The Lotus represents overcoming adversity, as the flowers blossom in the most stagnant and dirty pond waters, and they remain unspoilt by their dire surroundings. Therefore Lotuses represent pure, wise, spiritually enlightened people who are not dragged down by their circumstances and can blossom anywhere.
